SINKING SHIPS
Sinking Ships might just be the rising of Andy Colvin.
After spending years in Detroit stalwarts, Popular Creeps as a songwriter and guitarist, Colvin takes center stage as the mind behind Sinking Ships. With this debut eponymous EP, Colvin is bringing himself and his songs into the spotlight once and for all.
“I’ve always been attracted to and written songs from a sort of “semi-desperate, heart on sleeve” viewpoint - some of this stuff might be a little more direct…. But some of it might just be bullshit squeezed in for the sake of a good line.” says Colvin on his songwriting approach to the record.
Four years into his sobriety, Colvin doesn’t think that the songs are a genuine statement on this stage of his life, but he also acknowledges that there are moments where his newfound sobriety is easily found in the lyrical mapping of the tunes.
Sinking Ships is comprised of a crew of Detroit veterans backing up Colvin and his songs. Dave Feeney (ex-Blanche) added pedal steel and helped to produce and record the songs at his Tempermill Studios. Vocalist Kristin Von B. offers terrific harmonies throughout the record, and the uber-prolific Jim Faulkner anchors things on the drum kit. The songs feel more like a family affair than a formal recording session. The vibe of longtime friends and collaborators oozes from the grooves.
Inside the four songs one can hear nods to Neil Young, early R.E.M., The Replacements, and more. The debut Sinking Ships EP is available on digital and CD pn Phonophore Records on May 3, 2024.
